| Where do I begin? These tips can help you get started....
If your mailbox is by itself on it's own post, your needs and desires alone can guide you to a choice of our curbside models. If your box shares a horizontal mounting beam with several neighbor's traditional mailboxes, you will probably want a BELAIRE. Incoming mail enters about 2" below the top of a locking mailbox, so the carrier will have to reach about 9" to 10" higher to insert your mail into a Belaire than into the adjacent traditional mailboxes. For most carriers. that extra reach is probably acceptable.
A SENATOR (S16H) mailbox which is 18" tall, if mounted on the same support beam as the traditional boxes, would require the carrier to reach 15 or 16" higher than adjacent traditional boxes - probably not acceptable. Mounting a S16 or SXL on a separate post alongside, at the proper height could be the solution if you need a large box. If in doubt, ask your carrier before purchasing. Also, locking boxes are 11' to 12" wide (usps requires a locked box to have a 10" wide inlet). Be sure you have, or can make, enough room for the box width.
If you're leaning toward a BELAIRE (B20 or B20B), please note that the BELAIRE is also available in the heavier 16 Ga. stainless. 20 Ga. is .036" thick and 16 Ga. is .062", so if you're in an area where vandalism is or may become a consideration, the extra $50 for a 16 Ga. housing can be inexpensive insurance over the long term. Situations change over time, as do neighborhoods. It's worth a moment's thought! (All Senator models; S16 and SXL models are 16 Ga. construction as standard).
If you're considering the natural stainless finish, please look at the S16H or OLD TOWN page. Notice the visible spot welds (dark dots) on the natural finish boxes. They will not rust or "get worse", but if you find them objectionable, please consider the powder coated version.
Please look over the FEATURES page. The design features are the difference between just a "locking box" and a SECURE, HIGH QUALITY mailbox.
If you receive medications by mail, a large volume of mail, or are away from home for several days or more at a time, consider a SENATOR, either the S16 or SXL.
Don't be tempted to use an OLD TOWN mailbox for a curbside installation. It's a great and very secure porch (wall) mount box, but is not raintight, and not approved for curbside use.
